When discussing characterization, it is not enough to just identify the characters in a story. Character analysis should include a discussion of the characters and their overall impact on the story and on other characters. Support your analysis using quotations from the story and discuss the details the author employs to make his or her characters come alive.

Dialogue Quote: Use “” double quotation marks around dialogue quotes.

Example:

At the end of the story, when Dustin’s irresponsibility almost ruins their wedding ceremony, Priscilla sighs, “It’s a good thing I love you, dear.”

Combination of Text and Dialogue Quote: Use “” double quotation marks around the entire quote (beginning and ending), but use ‘’ single quotes around the dialogue part(s) of the quote.

Partial Quote: Use . . . ellipse to omit the beginning, middle, or end of a quote.

Example:

At the end of the story, when Dustin’s irresponsibility almost ruins their wedding ceremony, “Priscilla looked panicked for a minute, and then sighed. ‘It’s a good thing I love you, dear,’. . .”
