The objective of this exercise is to give you the opportunity to write your own introduction that discusses more about the literary technique of point of view in the short story “Views of an Artist”. You can refer to the Introduction Key and previous activities for help.

Find examples of point of view in the story that support the following thesis statement:

The story “Views of an Artist” illustrates how people can be their own worst enemies if they worry too much about what others are thinking.

It will be helpful to pick descriptive terms from the text first, since you will not be writing an entire essay. Make a list of the terms each of the characters use to describe each other before continuing with the exercise.

In section 1, write a general statement (topic sentence) that includes one of the following to get the reader interested in what comes next: a problem, a question, an interesting fact, an acknowledgement of an opinion opposite to the one you intend to support, a short anecdote, an analogy, or a definition of a relevant term.

In section 2, clearly explain the main issue that confronts the characters in a way that the reader can apply it to his or her own experience.

In section 3, transition from a general context to a specific discussion of the literary work (this section must include the title and author of the work.)

In section 4, sum up the theme of your essay without providing too many details.

In section 5, develop your thesis statement (this section should express where you stand in relation to the literary work and what the topic of your essay will be.)

Print out your introduction and have a teacher from your Preparation for College English course look at it. Good luck!
