The objective of this exercise is to give you the opportunity to write your own body paragraph that discusses more
about the literary technique of setting in “Home”. You can refer to the Hamburger Metaphor and previous activities
for help.

Find another example of setting in the story. It will be helpful to pick your quotation from the text first, as you will be using it to build your argument. Copy it from the text and paste it into section 3 as your quotation. (The sentence must be correctly copied from the text and be enclosed in quotation marks.)
In section 1, write a topic sentence that mentions the technique you are analyzing. (The sentence must include the word “setting.”)
In section 2, write an explanation of the situation to help introduce and integrate your quotation. (The sentence should explain: Who is this about? What is happening? How is it happening? Where and when is it happening?)
In section 3, make sure you have included your quotation, correctly copied from the text and enclosed in quotation marks.
In section 4, explain how your quotation illustrates the point your paragraph is making. (The sentence must explain: Why is this example important?)
In the last section, write a summary sentence that connects the example/technique to the thesis statement: Example of thesis statement: “In the short story “Home” by Kim Muncey, setting is used to express a woman’s tragic experience of a miscarriage.” How does the technique of setting express the woman’s feelings about her miscarriage or infertility? (The sentence must include words describing “feelings” or “experiences.”)
Print out your body paragraph and have a teacher from your Preparation for College English course look at it. Good luck!
