The objective of this exercise is to give you the opportunity to write your own conclusion that discusses more about the literary
technique of symbolism in the poem Winter Mourning. You can refer to the Conclusion Key and previous activities for help.
|
Find examples of symbolism in the story that support the following thesis statement:
The theme of Winter Mourning by Kim Muncey is the death of a relationship over time.
It will be helpful to pick the symbols from the text first, since you will not be writing an entire essay. Make a list of the symbols you wish to discuss before continuing with the exercise.
In section 1, write a general statement (topic sentence) that mentions the technique you are analyzing. (The sentence must include the words “symbol” or “symbolism.”)
In section 2, make a link from the literary technique to the thesis statement above. (The sentence must explain: How the author uses the technique of symbolism to effectively describe the death of a relationship.)
In section 3, synthesize the list of symbols you found that support the thesis statement. (This section must explain: Why are these examples important?)
In section 4, write one or two sentences that explain what you want the reader to remember about the use of symbolism in a literary work. (This section must answer the question, “What did I learn from this essay?”)
In section 5, sum up your (imaginary) essay with a powerful statement that will leave a lasting impression on the reader and make a link to the real world.
Print out your conclusion and have a teacher from your Preparation for College English course look at it. Good luck!
