The objective of this unit is to practise your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through learning about
the literary technique of imagery and how it is used by the author Kim Muncey in the short story “Measuring”.
Imagery is a collection of images or mental pictures that are created by the author’s words.
These images express feelings and states of mind, and most images appeal to (or
evoke)
one or more of the five senses:
- Visual imagery evokes the sense of sight
- Auditory imagery evokes the sense of hearing
- Tactile imagery evokes the sense of touch
- Olfactory imagery evokes the sense of smell
- Gustatory imagery evokes the sense of taste
Certain colours, objects, sounds, or activities may remind the reader of specific feelings or situations. For example,
a pink flower may make the reader think of springtime or a pleasant holiday memory.
