English Language Improvement Resources

There are many approaches to learning language. At the different stages of CEGEP, you will benefit from experimenting with a variety of resources. In this section, you will find some of those developed by the CCDMD, along with a brief description of each resource and the students who will most benefit from using them.

1000 Images on the Tip of My Tongue

	Description	Learn idiomatic expressions in English, French, and Spanish. Each idiom is explained in a short text and can be heard as an audio file. Search for an expression in one language and learn the equivalent expression in another language.
	Audience	Those taking English, French, and Spanish second-language and translation courses in English and French CEGEPs

A Listening Companion

	Description	Watch video clips of native English speakers interviewed on 13 topics and test your comprehension by answering questions. Listen to the accents, range of responses, and expressions, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, and their spontaneous answers to a series of questions.
	Audience	Those taking preparatory English courses at English-language CEGEPs and those learning English in French-language CEGEPs

College English Preparation Online

	Description	Learn literary techniques and practise your reading, writing, listening, and speaking (pronunciation). See how an author employs different literary techniques to express theme and meaning in a piece of literature.

Crisscross Words 3.3

	Description	Design and create personal dictionaries and generate crossword puzzles that can be directly converted into HTML for use on the Internet.
	Audience	Those taking preparatory English courses at English-language CEGEPS and those learning English in French-language CEGEPS

ECO

	Description	Create Internet exercises for learning a language by listening to, as well as pronouncing and recording sounds and short phrases. Libraries containing lists of sounds and publishable pronunciation exercises can also be accessed with this tool.

Language and Reading Companion

	Description	Read up to 15 texts, reprints of articles, and short stories from Canadian authors on various topics (Business, Literature, Geography, and Humanities). Option to listen to and read each article at the same time. Test your comprehension by answering quiz questions.
	Audience	Those learning English at an intermediate level in either A or B block courses at French-language CEGEPs

Online Tutoring System for Essay Writing

	Description	Improve writing skills by understanding sentence structure and grammar and do writing exercises that cover various grammar rules and sentence structure.
	Audience	Those taking preparatory English courses at English-language CEGEPs or core English courses (101, 102, 103) and students learning English at higher levels at French-language CEGEPs
